New stories:

On Pets and Men

I once promised that if I came out of poor health, I would write a book to make people smile. That is what the book is about.

You can get a taste of it on Google books here so from now on, you will only find unpublished and less literary stories on this site. I have been touched by the review of Victor: "The book is filled with fun stories about the author's private conversations with animals such as a stalking raven, a spider who has taken on a liking for Mozart, and a dog who misses his calling as a linguist... A great read!"

While I redo this site, enjoy the following stories

The bluebird house

bird house

This is not a story yet, just how to start one for spring.

If you bought the book, I hope you did, you know (1) that bluebirds check their future nests on the first good day of January, even if they only nest in the spring. Lots of people are not as smart as that. (2) On the other hand, sometimes they disagree and the nesting location could well be a cause of divorce.

Yesterday, Mr bluebird came to inspect the nests on the iron bench (this is the view from my house), so it was inspection time for me too. The greenish rattan house in front is where the bluebirds nested for the last four years. It was falling apart and the base was rotten. I cleaned the house, glued a new bottom, consolidated the crumbling walls best I could and varnished the roof to rainproof it. I used a rice chopstick as a new perch.

I hope this will please the new couple: birds around here rarely live more than one year, so I assume that the male I saw yesterday was born in the rattan house: it is his heirloom.

Under the porch, there is an old letter-holder generally used by kingslets and noisy chickadees nest every year under the roof in an old teapot.

How do you define happiness?
